From Newspapers to Parcels: Repurposing Legacy Distribution Networks

A Montreal native who currently lives on the East Coast in Canada, Derrick spent a number of years on sales and business development. He started his career in packaged goods sales (Labatt Beer) and evolved into technology working for such organizations as Corel, IBM, OpenText, Bell Canada, Desire2Learn, and Intelex in the enterprise software space in a series of progressively senior sales roles.

He later became President & CEO of the Saint John Airport (YSJ) a medium-sized regional airport in Canada, and was elected President of the Atlantic Canada Airports Association where he led the COVID-relief funding efforts for the Eastern Canadian Airports through the Federal Government.

More recently, Stanford joined Brunswick News in March of 2021 where he led their emerging eCommerce and eFulfillment practice working with on-line and traditional retailers to help provide new and innovative paths to the end-consumer. Brunswick News was acquired by Postmedia Network (Canada’s largest newspaper publisher with 130 titles nationally) in March of 2022 where Derrick is currently the Vice President of Business Development for Postmedia’s newly formed Postmedia Parcel Services division.

With continued growth in e-commerce, news organizations are finding innovative ways to capitalize on their existing infrastructure and delivery networks. Postmedia Network Inc. in Canada, launched Postmedia Parcel Services in May 2021, partnering with Routesmart Technologies and other newspapers to form a national network. By leveraging their legacy distribution network, Postmedia is defining new revenue streams while continuing to provide high-quality editorial content to their subscribers.
